Class Settlement Approved by Court

"The Motion for Final Approval is GRANTED on the terms set forth in this Final Approval Order, and the parties and their counsel are directed to implement and consummate the Settlement according to its terms and provisions as set forth in the Settlement Agreement."


Now that the Settlement has been approved Plaintiffs' Counsel will begin preparing settlement awards to class members. The City has indicated that they will wire the funds to our account on 11/27 which means that we will not be making distributions of individual checks  to individual class members until late December

The deadline to submit claims was September 9, 2024. If you have not yet submitted a claim form you are still able to submit a late claim however all late claim forms will be subject to court approval and may not be accepted.

BLACK LIVES MATTER LOS ANGELES V. CITY OF SANTA MONICA is a class action in Los Angeles federal court against the CITY OF SANTA MONICA (“CITY”) for arrests made at demonstrations in the City of Santa Monica on May 31, 2020 and June 1, 2020 to protest the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The parties have reached a settlement and obtained preliminary approval by the judge. If the court gives final approval, class members will receive money. You are a class member and may be entitled to money if CITY records show you were arrested in connection with the protests in the CITY on the above dates. 

Class members are entitled to an amount between $5600 and $7000 (depending on how many people file claims).

1. Who is part of this case?  You are a class member (part of this case) if you were detained and cited or arrested on May 31or June 1, 2020 by the Santa Monica Police Department (“SMPD”) at protests in Santa Monica about the death of George Floyd.  Only SMPD records will be used to decide class members.

2. Who is the judge presiding over the case? This case is assigned to the Honorable Christina Snyder, U.S. District Judge.
